Teeth Whitening FAQs
-
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure that overall brightens the look of your smile when peroxide gels are used to break up the surface and deep stain molecules within your teeth through an oxidation process. Any at home products used only remove surface stains and can take weeks to notice a difference. At Glow Haven we use clean, safe and effective whitening gels to give you instant, natural, longer lasting results.

Most of our sessions are 90 minutes. Our touch-up sessions are only an hour.
We do a complimentary consult to go over your forms and address your goals, sensitivity concerns and stains, to help set realistic expectations and if you might need a 2nd session. We will take before photos and have you do a quick pre-brush to prep for the procedure. A gum barrier will be placed to protect your gums. 3 rounds of whitening gel are applied, with our LED light to help speed up the process. You will then clean up and we will get after photos and reveal your new smile!

If you have sensitivity concerns and your main priority is to decrease that, make sure to book our sensitivity session. We have special, gentler gels and take a more gradual whitening approach for comfort. You should experience very little to no sensitivity going this route. There might need to be a touch-up appointment a few weeks later to finish up the whitening process, depending on your ending shade.
Some things that can increase the likelihood of sensitivity are cracks, chips and wear on the teeth, thinner/decalcified enamel, untreated cavities, recession, etc.

Our clients typically see results of 6-14 shades whiter, but several factors influence that. These results can be achieved through one session or also adding on a touch-up session.
Factors such as our diet, lifestyle, genetics, enamel thickness, age, stains and starting shade all impact the results. Everyone has their own natural stopping point when whitening. Some can get to a brighter shade than others naturally.
At Glow Haven, we focus on safe, natural, effective results and we customize treatments for every session.

Results typically last about 4 months, up to a year. Our teeth naturally fade over time and at home maintenance plus our diet play a huge role in how long it lasts. Some people come every 6 months, but frequent coffee/tea/wine drinkers or those who smoke, it is recommended every 3-4 months to maintain your brightness. Some people have teeth that also stain quicker than others.
Having an at home maintenance plan (using whitening toothpastes, strips, trays, etc), is critical to help keep your results lasting longer between sessions.

Any restorations done at the dentist, will not whiten like your natural teeth. If your restorations are a good color match to your teeth right now, I would not recommend any whitening. If they are brighter than your natural teeth, then whitening can help them match better. It is recommended to whiten at least 3-4 weeks before you plan to get any dental work done or replaced.
-
You are not a good candidate for whitening if you have any untreated dental work, cavities, gum disease, or big chips/cracks in your teeth. Anyone currently experiencing a lot of sensitivity regularly, should post-pone whitening. At Glow Haven, we will NOT see anyone that hasn’t had a dental checkup/cleaning within the last year. It is important to have a healthy mouth before whitening.

Teeth whitening is an overall very safe procedure, with little side effects such as gum irritations or tooth sensitivity.
If you are pregnant, we recommend postponing any whitening treatments, unless you ask your OBGYN and they say it’s okay for you. Then, we leave it up to you to decide if you want to whiten. There have been no studies done on pregnant women to tell if it is safe or harmful. Sometimes the gums and teeth can be more sensitive during whitening.
If you are breastfeeding, we leave it up to you to decide if you want to whiten.

For best results, it is critical to stick to a “white diet” for 48 hours after. Avoid any dark colored foods/beverages such as coffee, tea, wine, soda, red sauces, dark berries, smoking, etc. Our enamel is very prone to staining the couple days after a whitening procedure.
It is always highly recommended to do a maintenance at home between sessions to help your results last longer. This can include whitening toothpastes, strips, pens, trays, etc and needs to be done consistently or routinely to be effective. Glow Haven has a whitening pen ($26) available for purchase after your session is completed. Having good oral hygiene, staying on top of your cleanings/checkups at the dental office and drinking through a straw when you can, all help keep stains at bay.
